  • I have an Englishman’s lungs, and they resent rainforests. (This is not as random as it sounds.) #
  • Today @zdarsky is powered by hobos covered in chocolate. No, really. Subscribe to his “newsletter” (list of people he hasn’t raped yet). #

  • The closer you look at an original William Blake, the more blisteringly crazy he gets. #

Rainbow Orchid in 2009
From [info]rainboworchid (AKA Garen Ewing, whose gorgeous and sublime A-Z of comic strip characters is one of my favourite things on the internet recently) comes this preview teaser for Rainbow Orchid, finally seeing print next year. I can hardly wait!

  • Disturbingly, have rediscovered a taste for Manhattans. I blame my daughter (who orders Safe Sex On The Beach in cocktail bars). #

Monoprint MFD last one

This is another redo of an earlier monoprint which was damaged. Again much larger print [22"x30"]

For anyone whose been confused by what I mean by monoprint I thought I'd try and describe the process. You take a piece of Perspex [the size you want your image to be] and paint on to it. There's no rule on how you paint on the perspex, you can mix colours, use different items to make texture [like ripped up socks, or bits of cardboard with patterns cut into them], use any number of tools to make marks, you can cut into the perspex [but I dislike doing that as it usually means you can't reuse that piece of perspex]. For all the monoprints I've been doing I've used small rubber rollers, cheese cloth, and my fingers. I use etching ink as it wipes off a little easier then litho ink. Once you've created your image and are happy with it, you put it on a press and cover with printing paper larger then the perspex thats been soaking in water for at least 20mins. Run through the press and when you peel off the paper your image should have transfered [in reverse] onto the paper. Unlike etching or woodblock you can only get one print hence the name monoprint.

Monoprint Horse take 2
Sorry for the long radio silence but the last few weeks of the residency were panic mode as I tired to get all the prints done that I wanted to finish. I then came home to a very wet Ireland to find my net connection down in my studio [due to the aforementioned wet conditions] and it took over a week to fix. But back online now and with a few of the last monoprints I pulled before coming home to post.

The earlier horse monoprint was damaged so I redid it but on a much larger plate [22"x30"] and added some background elements as I felt he looked odd jumping nothing in the first one.

Gareth Lyn Powell’s THE LAST REEF

The excellent short fiction of Gareth Powell, collected for the first time, from Elastic Press. I wrote a back cover blurb for this: "Just the way sf should work."

Ronnie Drew RIP
According to the RTÉ Website Ronnie Drew of the Dubliners died this afternoon aged 73, after a long illness. To say he was iconic is simply understatement of the most egregious kind.

Here he, along with the rest of The Dubliners, on Top of the Pops with The Pogues in 1987, performing The Irish Rover.

We will not see his likes again.
